As we move through Q4, many of us are reflecting on the rituals and rhythms that ground us, at home, at work, and within our communities. The end of the year often brings tradition into focus. But for leaders like us, tradition carries dual weight: it connects us to where we come from, but can also tether us to systems that no longer serve us.

An invitation to reflect:

Leadership tradition often looks like replication, not reinvention.

But what happens when we start to break from the scripts handed to us, the inherited ways of working, leading, and succeeding, to lead in ways that actually reflect who we are?

Tradition taught us to fit in. Leadership asks us to stand out. Maybe the real power is in breaking form altogether. Something more aligned, more equitable, more human.

Here are a few questions we’re sitting with this season:

  • Cultural Legacy and Corporate Norms: How have your family, cultural, or spiritual traditions shaped your relationship with leadership?

  • Inheriting Power: What leadership behaviours did you learn growing up, and which have you unlearned?

  • Breaking Silence: What’s something you’ve recently started saying out loud that you used to keep quiet?

  • Tradition Worth Keeping: What’s one tradition (personal, professional, or cultural) you’ve chosen to carry forward?

There’s no single right answer, only a shared commitment to lead differently. To lead with intention, integrity, and imagination.

As we close out the year, may we all make room for the new while honouring the lessons of the old. Because leadership, like tradition, is not something we inherit; it’s something we choose to cultivate.
